Dr.
Michael L. Galaty
Dr.
Galaty is currently conducting two research projects, each of
which students are involved.
The
Mallakastra Regional Archaeological Project (MRAP)
Each
summer 2-3 students accompany Dr. Galaty to central Albania to
participate in an on-going program of archaeological surface survey
in the vicinity of the Greek colony of Apollonia, founded in the
6th century BC. Artifacts found so far in Mallakastra
range in date from early periods of human prehistory, some associated
with our cousins, the Neanderthals, through the later Classical,
Hellenistic, and Roman periods.
Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship (BRCES)
Dr.
Galaty is also conducting archaeological surface survey on a tract
of land located in northern Virginia and owned by Robert and Dee
Leggett. This piece of property, encompassing ca. 1000 acres in
the Blue Ridge mountains near Harper’s Ferry, WV, and the Appalachian
Trail, is the future home of the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental
Stewardship. The property holds several historic (18th-19th
century) homesteads and is also likely to produce Native American
and Civil War materials. This project has been developed together
with Dr.
Debora Mann of the Millsaps Biology Department, and will eventually
evolve into an archaeological-biological field school.
