The
Hardin Award
Established
to honor the late Paul Hardin, emeritus professor of English, this
award goes to the outstanding senior English major at Millsaps.
The English department faculty will select this student based primarily
on overall GPA and GPA in English courses, achievement on the comprehensive
exam, and the breadth of the student's coursework. We will also
consider the contributions the student has made to various classes
and to the life of the English department.
The
Clark Essay Prize
This
prize is awarded yearly to a senior English major for the best essay written
in an English class at Millsaps. The essay must demonstrate imagination,
good writing, and fresh critical thinking. Essays written as part of the
honors program are ineligible for consideration. Students may submit their
essays or faculty members may submit essays on behalf of students by March
31. A committee from the English department will select the outstanding
essay. Essays may be from 5 to 20 pages and must be double-spaced.
To
submit an essay, type the essay neatly on standard-size white paper. Do
not include your name on the essay itself. A cover sheet will be available
on the table in the Common Room of the English House. Please fill out
the cover sheet, including all of the information required. Attach the
cover sheet to the essay and submit it to the Chair of the English department
in a manilla envelope marked Clark Essay Prize.
The
Robert H. Padgett Award
Established
to honor emeritus professor of English Robert H. Padgett, this award
is given annually to the student whose work on the comprehensive
exam (both oral and written) is the most outstanding among graduating
seniors.
The
Dora Lynch Hanley Award
Designed
to recognize excellent writing, this award is given annually to a freshman,
sophomore, or junior student at Millsaps. The recipient will receive a
stipend payable upon enrollment at Millsaps for the following fall semester.
Interested students should contact Professor Paula Garrett, director of
the Writing Program, for details.
The
Bellamann Award in Creative Writing
This
award is given annually to a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior for
excellence in creative writing. A committee convened by the Chair of the
English Department will select the winning piece from the entries submitted
to the Southern Literary Festival each fall. Deadline for submitting entries
will be announced each year, usually around the end of January or early
February.
