Talk with your advisor and other English department faculty:
"[My advisor] was very supportive of me in my pursuit of a
career in advertising, and wrote a very nice letter of reference
for me to present to prospective employers (aside from a very compelling
objective statement, my resume was not so impressive at that point,
so the letter helped!)."
"I remember talking to [my advisor] about whether I should
take the GMAT or the GRE, and she encouraged me to take both, and
I continued to explore both graduate school options. I took her
advice and was glad I did."
"My advisor encouraged me to think about a variety of career
choices, rather than immediately settling into one particular path.
This helped me analyze what it was that I really enjoyed doing and
try to find a career where I would be able to do those things on
a daily basis."
"I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the writing field because
of [my professors'] mentoring. I thought I wanted to be an English
professor. While I am not an English professor, I got where I am
now by writing and teaching people to write."
"The professors who I'd kept in touch with were very helpful
in giving me advice when I started graduate school, when I decided
to leave it, and then again when I decided to go to law school.
For me, then, the most important thing was that I felt that I had
mentors among the faculty."
