Internships

Sponsored Internships - Companies & Firms - What Students Have to Say

College is a place where students begin to consider career choices. To this end, an internship can be a critical part of a student's educational process. Students apply the theories learned in the classroom to "real world" experiences in a particular field of work.

Internships are a cooperative effort involving the student, one or more faculty members and the student's field supervisor. Together, this group must agree upon the terms of the internship as specified in the internship registration documents provided by the Registrar's office. Activities of the intern must include legitimate student inquiry and be amenable to evaluation on that basis. Internships may be sponsored by the Else School or the Career Development Center.

Else School Sponsored Internships:

Else School sponsored internships must be sponsored by an Else School faculty member. Accounting residencies must be sponsored by a member of the accounting faculty. Grading of Else School Sponsored Internships and the accounting residency should ordinarily be on a Credit/No Credit (CR/NC) basis. The Millsaps catalog states that CR/NC courses may not count for Else School course credit. Additionally, no more than 8 semester hours for undergraduates and 6 semester hours for graduates may be taken on a CR/NC basis.

Else School sponsored internships should require the student to intern in a meaningful capacity for at least 10-12 hours per week for the 14 week semester to receive 4 credit hours (3 graduate hours). In cases where more extensive academic work is involved, justifying graded credit, the course may be offered as a directed study.

What Students Have to Say:

Internship experience:

Randy Bass (Mississippi Business Journal and McRae's)
"I participated in two internships while pursuing my B.B.A. - one with the Mississippi Business Journal and one with McRae's. These internships were an excellent opportunity for me to practice and develop the skills taught in the classroom. The internships also exposed me to many situations and experiences that a classroom setting alone could not have offered me. As a result, technical, human, and conceptual skills have all improved. I also have gained practical work experience - something many employers look for in graduating students. I thoroughly enjoyed my experiences, and I highly recommend the internship experience to all students."

Sally Clark (International Ballet Competition)
"They (IBC) have taught me a lot about how a non-profit organization runs, how to communicate efficiently, and also how to work with a staff full of diversity...They treated me like I was one of them, which really made me feel included. Working at the USA IBC helped me put my life into perspective..."

"In my classes, I would always wonder how any of the work we did would relate in the "working" world. My work at the IBC helped me put all of my marketing and business classes in perspective."

Soria Colomer (Mississippi Department of Economic and Community Development)
"I would encourage anyone interested in international business or international affairs to intern in this department. Aside from the well educated and experienced staff, the opportunity to meet influential businessmen and diplomats is rewarding. Fortunately, my internship has been extended...This is a wonderful opportunity for me to learn a great deal more about international trade. More importantly, it is an incredible boost to know that my colleagues have requested that I stay.

Ashley Lalande (International Trade Center)
"I consider myself lucky, because not only did I receive experience in the field of business, I also received international experience which will help me in the fast and ever-changing global market."

Ben Nonnemacher (Nichols Research)
"I learned many great lessons about the human resource and corporate worlds in my time at my Nichols internship. I will surely be able to use these lessons in my own job search this spring semester."

Accounting residency:

Karen Chiang (Arthur Andersen)
"This program is a great way to find out if this is what you want to do coming out of college, and the experience you obtain from it is incredible. I would highly recommend to anyone to try and be a part of it because there is really nothing to lose, just a whole lot to gain."

Betsy Dorough (Deloitte & Touche)
"With group interaction, Beta Alpha Psi outings, and team presentations, I felt professionally prepared at Millsaps to enter the business environment, and for that I was grateful."

Duane Fewell (Collins & Corbin)
"Academically, I believe I am prepared for anything that an entry-level position in the accounting field will throw at me."

Anne Minor (Grantham, Randall, Arrington & Co.)
"For me this program was exactly what I needed at this time in my education... This experience gave me the chance to see what working as an accountant was really like, and assure myself that this is what I really wanted to do..."

Amy Palmer (Davenport, Holliday & Spring)
"My education at Millsaps was very beneficial in this experience; however, there is so much more about accounting and the real world beyond the classroom."

Christy Robertson (Collins & Corbin)
"I am now more prepared...to seek a full-time job, and I know what kinds of questions that I should ask to determine if both the employer and I would benefit from a possible relationship."
