As the fall semester ends and winter break offers an abundance of free time, I have had the opportunity to reflect on my 2006 fall semester at Millsaps. My sophomore year has been full of new and exciting experiences both in the classroom and on campus at Millsaps; I can honestly say there was never a dull moment.
When I first arrived on campus I dove into several on-campus activities. As part of the Greek community I helped my sorority get ready for recruitment. Recruitment was especially exciting for me because it was my first year to be involved in recruiting new members to join the Greek community. Recruitment was such a great way to meet a lot of the incoming freshman girls, and I was very fortunate to make many new friends. I also started my job as a Presidential Ambassador for the office of admissions. I was especially excited about my job because I loved volunteering for admissions as a freshman and looked forward to becoming more involved as an upperclassman. I was able to help with freshman welcome weekend and several visit programs for prospective students, as well as work one-on-one with prospective students visiting our campus. I also devoted a lot of time to running and competing for the school as a member of the Millsaps Cross Country team. This year our team grew and became much more competitive. Being a part of a sports team has definitely been one of my favorite opportunities at Millsaps. Competing for a division three school is especially unique because the lack of athletic scholarships draws athletes who compete for the love of the sport rather than money or status.
As if all my activities weren’t enough to keep me busy, school was increasingly challenging this past semester. I declared my Chemistry major and Biology minor. Organic chemistry and cell biology were definitely tough courses, but my professors were always available to help if I needed it. Next semester I plan to start undergraduate research. Doing research is an opportunity at Millsaps that will really be beneficial when I apply for post graduate work or school. Millsaps has definitely been an academic challenge and required a lot of work, but I know I am receiving an outstanding education that will prepare me for whatever I decide to do after my four years here.
All in all, this past semester was definitely busy and a lot of hard work. But the work was very rewarding and I have had a blast!!
