Rotary Foundation Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship
 Millsaps senior Katie Beth Miksa (Monroe, LA) will study in Taiwan through a Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship from the Rotary Foundation. Katie Beth will study at the Taipei Language Institute-Kaohsiung Center in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, from December 2006 until June 2007. In addition to working with local Rotary clubs in Kaohsiung and their community service projects, which focus on education and health education, there is also the possibility of a goodwill trip to the island of Bali to speak and serve with an all-women's Rotary club there. Katie Beth plans to use her Taiwan experience to help her prepare for graduate studies in translation and interpretation in the field of international relations.
According to the Rotary Foundation’s website, “Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships are for either three or six months of intensive language study and cultural immersion in another country and provide funds to cover round-trip transportation, language training expenses, and homestay living arrangements.” Those who receive an Ambassadorial Scholarship are sent as representatives of their homeland to a host country in order to explore and discuss cultures and to find common interests between them. Scholars are chosen from 70 countries around the globe, and are sent to study and learn to 70 other nations.
“I once read that it is a dangerous business, going out your front door; you never know where the road may take you,” Katie Beth said. “Living in the unfamiliar, engaging in service with persons unknown—these are the experiences that shape us, that captivate us, that help us to escape our own conventions and gain a broader perspective. The Rotary Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship is an opportunity to pass through my own front door, and I gratefully welcome the new lifestyle, dialogue and adventures that await me on the other side.”
