Campaign Highlights

Commitment to International Studies $  8,000,000
In order to develop students who will make a significant difference in the world, Millsaps must provide those students with life-changing experiences and opportunities that reach beyond the classroom. Funds are needed to create and enhance international study programs that will not only broaden students’ visions of the world and expose them to other cultures, but also cultivate the character, understanding, and skills that will prepare them to become global leaders.
Yucatan
Scholarships for International Experiences  $  5,000,000
Approximately one-third of Millsaps students currently participate in international studies. Funds are needed to ensure that all students have the opportunity to take part in an international studies program at least once during their time at Millsaps. Study abroad will take students outside their comfort zones, helping them to more fully understand the larger world and their place of vocation and service within it. Funds will also be used to develop additional international programs for cultural immersion and faculty and student research.

Yucatán Program  $  3,000,000
The College’s Helen Moyers Biocultural Reserve at Kiuic in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula is host to the only program of its kind in the nation. The 4,500-acre reserve contains a wealth of archaeological sites important to the understanding of ancient and modern Maya culture. The Yucatán Program offers faculty and students a living laboratory where they study the relationships among disciplines as varied as biology, English, business, the environment, and archaeology. The Reserve—which demonstrates connections between economic development, environmental policy, and cultural preservation—has become a national model for interdisciplinary studies. Endowment support from the Campaign will provide for continuing operations, faculty and student research stipends, and expanded course offerings.

A Legacy Without Borders
Millsaps prides itself on graduating leaders who are committed to and capable of changing the world, and senior Katie Beth Miksa is no exception. From December 2006 until June 2007, Katie Beth will study at the Taipei Language Institute-Kaohsiung Center in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, working with local Rotary Clubs in Kaohsiung on community service projects. Katie Beth plans to use her experience to prepare for graduate studies in international relations.

“I once read that it is a dangerous business, going out your front door; you never know where the road may take you,” Katie Beth says. “Living in the unfamiliar, engaging in service with persons unknown—these are the experiences that shape us, that captivate us, that help us to escape our own conventions and gain a broader perspective. Millsaps has given me the opportunity to pass through my own front door, and I gratefully welcome the new adventures that await me on the other side.” The Campaign’s emphasis on International Studies will ensure that all Millsaps’ students have the opportunity to step beyond their front doors and into new adventures.
