Singers Give Voice to “Go Forward, Millsaps”

by Web on November 15, 2016

The Millsaps Singers and its rendition of the College’s fight song during Homecoming 2016 provided a stirring moment.

It was a group effort to make the song’s performance possible.

Dr. T. W. Lewis, B.A. 1953, emeritus professor of religion, recalled the melody and words to the fight song, officially known as “Go Forward, Millsaps.” Jonathan Trotter, interim director of choral activities at Millsaps, and Dr. Jason Carl Rosenberg, visiting assistant professor of music composition and theory at Millsaps, took it from there to produce the music and harmonies.

Here are the lyrics that the Millsaps Singers sang:

“Go Forward, Millsaps”
(Millsaps’ fight song)

Go forward, Millsaps
On to victory and
Win another time!

Go forward, Millsaps
And we’ll show them how
Those Majors hold that line!
(Rah! Rah!)

And as we fight
For Purple and for White
And as we give our all

We’ll show the world
We stand unyielding
And we’ll never ever fall!
(Rah! Rah!)

According to information in the Millsaps College Archives, the College has an even earlier version of the fight song. The first fight song first appeared on Oct. 27, 1948, and was introduced during chapel. On Oct. 29, 1948, it was first used at a football game.

Here are the lyrics to the first version:

Fight, fight, Purple and White! (Originally Rah, rah, Purple and White)
Give us the victory.
Millsaps’ fame her Majors have made.
Never let her glory fade!
Alma Mater to thee
Ever we’ll loyal be.
Let song and cheer
Ring loud and clear
For Millsaps and victory!
