Greek Legacy Field Studies
CLST 2051
 This field study, which is a complement to a multi-disciplinary course on the Legacy of
Ancient Greece, is designed to bring ancient history to life by introducing students to the
art, archaeology and culture of ancient and Byzantine Greece. We begin in Athens and
explore the Parthenon and the other temples of the Acropolis, the theater of Dionysius
where Greek tragedy and comedy were first presented, and the Agora where Socrates
taught, was put on trial and died. We then travel by comfortable motor coach to Corinth, the
site of Paul’s Letters to the Corinthians; Epidauros and its stunning theater; Mycenae, the
city of Agamemnon and Cytemnestra; Sparta, the rival city-state to Athens, and the sublime
Byzantine ruins at Mystras. We then travel over the Arcadian mountains to Olympia, the
verdant and peaceful site of the original Olympian Games. Our next stop is the breathtaking
site of the famous oracle of ancient times, Delphi. By sea, we travel to four islands - Crete,
with its amazing Bronze Age ruins of Knossos; Santorini, considered to be the source of the
myth of Atlantis; Mykonos, a picturesque island with windmills and small villages; and
Delos, the birthplace of Apollo. Throughout the tour we visit wonderful museums with
unparalleled art works, eat in tavernas with Greek specialties and stay in comfortable hotels
with all the amenities.

Roman Legacy Field Studies
CLST 2001
 This field study, also a complement to a multi-disciplinary course on the Legacy of Ancient
Rome, is designed to bring ancient history to life by introducing students to the art,
archaeology and culture of Rome. We begin in Sorrento on the breathtaking Amalfi coast;
from there we'll journey to the isle of Capri to see remains of Tiberius' Villa, and to
Pompeii, the historic city covered in volcanic ash in 79 CE. We travel next to Rome where
we'll explore the Palatine and Capitoline hills, the Colosseum, the Imperial Fora and
Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli, a small and sumptuous city of its own. Students will also visit
some of Italy's finest museums in Rome including the Vatican Museum and tour the necropolis (city of the dead) underneath St. Peter's Basilica while experiencing the richness
of contemporary Italian culture. We'll stay in small bed and breakfasts and dine in local
trattorias to partake of Italy at its fullest!
