Millsaps College Professors Among Best Teachers in Nation According to Princeton Review Student Survey

Princeton Review Book CoverIn The Princeton Review's The Best 376 Colleges, Millsaps was ranked among the best in the nation as well as in two special Top 20 categories:  Professors Get High Marks (No. 8) and Town-Gown Relations Are Great (No. 19). Based on student responses, Millsaps professors received the eighth highest ranking in the country as a college where students consider their instructors "good teachers." The College was also selected for the Town-Gown Relations category, which refers to positive student interaction with the members of the local community.

In addition, Millsaps College was the only private college in Mississippi included in the 2012 Fiske Guide to Colleges.

"We are pleased to once again be named to both the Princeton Review's 'Best' list and the Fiske Guide to Colleges," said Dr. Robert W. Pearigen, president of Millsaps College. "Millsaps is a stellar academic environment provided by a nationally acclaimed and deeply caring faculty.  Distinctive study abroad opportunities, meaningful community service activities and significant pre-professional programs add further quality to the Millsaps experience, ensuring the very best in liberal arts education as preparation for life."

Only about 15 percent of America's 2,500 four-year colleges and three colleges outside the U.S.A. are profiled in The Princeton Review's flagship college guide. It includes detailed profiles of the colleges with rating scores for all schools in eight categories, plus ranking lists of top 20 schools in the book in 62 categories based on The Princeton Review's surveys of students attending the colleges.

In its profile of Millsaps, The Princeton Review notes that points of pride for the College include a broad core curriculum, a strong interdisciplinary writing program, a five-year MBA program, highly respected pre-professional programs in law and medicine and a strong emphasis on study abroad.

The Princeton Review quotes extensively from Millsaps students surveyed for the book. Among the students' comments on the college: Millsaps is "all about creating an atmosphere in which students are excited to not only learn, but [to also] think," and one quality that really distinguishes Millsaps students is their "strong desire to serve the community and be good neighbors to the Jackson area."

Robert Franek, Princeton Review's senior vice-president, publisher and author of The Best 376 Colleges said, "We commend Millsaps for its outstanding academics, which is the primary criteria for our selection of schools for the book.  Our choices are based on institutional data we collect about schools, our visits to schools over the years, feedback we gather from students attending the schools, and the opinions of our staff and our 28-member National College Counselor Advisory Board.  We also work to keep a wide representation of colleges in the book by region, size, selectivity and character."

In its profile of Millsaps, The Fiske Guide to Colleges comments on the college's motto, ad excellentiam, meaning "promoting excellence" and says, "What differentiates the school is its focus on scholarly inquiry, spiritual growth, and community service, along with its Heritage Program, an interdisciplinary approach to world culture."
