Millsaps College's athletic program recently accepted the David M. Halbrook Award for having the highest graduation rate among Mississippi's independent colleges and universities during the 2010-11 academic year. Millsaps has received the Halbrook Award 20 times since the award's inception in 1984.

Also honored during the October ceremony at the annual Mississippi Association of Colleges (MAC) Conference were Millsaps seniors William Derrick (football) and Margaret Tumminello (volleyball). They received individual Halbrook Awards recognizing their achievements as student athletes who excel in academics, leadership and community service.
"We are very pleased to once again receive the honor of having the best graduation rate for scholar-athletes among private institutions," said Dr. Keith Dunn, senior vice president and dean of the College. "We are proud of our scholar-athletes and of our coaches who emphasize the importance of balancing academic excellence with athletic achievement."
Millsaps College, which has approximately 175 scholar-athletes, produced a graduation rate of 97 percent during the five-year time frame used by the MAC to calculate the award. During that time period, Millsaps had 14 NCAA men's and women's athletic teams.
The Halbrook Award was established in 1984 by the state Legislature and was set up to recognize colleges that achieve high academic standards and to encourage high graduation rates.
