Millsaps Professors to Read from Their Book on May 2

Dr. Catherine Fries

Dr. Greg Miller

Millsaps College Professors Emeriti of Classics Catherine and Richard Freis and Millsaps College Professor of English Greg Miller are scheduled to sign copies of their edition of George Herbert's elegies in Latin and Greek: Memoriae Matris Sacrum: To the Memory of My Mother at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Lemuria Books (in the Dot Com building or annex).

A reading and presentation is scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Audience members will hear the voice of a major lyric poet of the 17th century celebrating the virtues of his powerful mother, Lady Magdalen Danvers, a patroness of the arts, humanities and letters in Renaissance Britain.

The professors were commissioned to prepare the new translation of Memoriae Matris Sacrum that was written in the month after the death of Lady Danvers. The poems were originally published in 1627 together with John Donne's Sermon of Commemoration for Lady Danvers. As soon as the Millsaps professors started translating the poems, they were stunned by their excellence and also by how badly they were interpreted, so they expanded the book to creating a new critical text, as well as extensive commentaries on the 19 poems.

The event is free.
