Canon Andrew White, "Vicar of Baghdad," to Speak at Millsaps

The Millsaps College Office of the Chaplain is joining with Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church and St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral to sponsor "An Evening with the Vicar of Baghdad," on Tuesday, August 13 at 7 p.m. in the Gertrude C. Ford Academic Complex Recital Hall. A reception with book-signing will follow in the Academic Complex Art Gallery. Admission to both events is free and no tickets are required.

Rev. Canon Andrew White is pastor of St. George's Anglican Church in Baghdad, Iraq, a congregation of over 4,000 communicants. In addition to his pastoral work, Canon White has an extraordinary ministry of reconciliation and conflict mediation through the Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East, focusing on, among other things, dialogue between Sunni and Shia leaders in Iraq. 

He is a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge and Harvard University and has served as special envoy for interreligious dialogues in the Middle East for two previous Archbishops of Canterbury. Canon White is also the author several books, including The Vicar of Baghdad (2009), Suffer the Children (2010), Faith under Fire (2011), and Father, Forgive (2013).

In addition to his talk at Millsaps, Canon White will have a brown bag lunch conversation at Hawkins United Methodist Church in Vicksburg (3736 Halls Ferry Road) on Tuesday, August 13 at 12 noon. He will also speak at Parkway Hills United Methodist Church in Madison (1468 Highland Colony Parkway) on Wednesday, August 14 at 10 a.m.
