Trey Vernaci of Pearlington, Mississippi, is a sophomore political science major and the man who brings the Millsaps College mascot, “The Major,” to life. The mascot honors the namesake of the College, Major Reuben Millsaps. Vernaci is the 2013 Student Body Association treasurer and 2014 vice president, a Foundations course leader, a resident in the Wellspring Living and Learning Community and a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
Vernaci served as the mascot for his high school, Hancock High School, for two years, and attended two UCA Summer Mascot Camps where he was named an All-American Mascot twice.
“I enjoyed entertaining others and being an important part of creating school spirit at Hancock High School, and when I began applying for college, I decided I wanted to continue as a mascot,” said Vernaci. “I knew Millsaps had an excellent academic reputation and being able to be a mascot while pursuing a great education was a perfect opportunity for me.”
While being a mascot keeps Vernaci busy, making the most of the Millsaps experience is also a big part of Vernaci’s time. “The small campus, the sense of community and the emphasis on community engagement intrigued me, and the location was appealing, too,” he said.
“I knew that being able to attend a college in the heart of a capital city would provide opportunities for internships in government and allow me to live in a historical city with diverse cultural opportunities.”
