Add in an event that benefits the state's only children's hospital and features samples of chili, and you'll have an idea of what Sigma Alpha Epsilon's annual Chili Bowl is like.

Part of Spring Family Weekend (March 1-3), the Chili Bowl is a way for the Mississippi Delta Chapter of SAE at Millsaps College to give back to the campus and the greater Jackson area.

Each year, about 400 people buy tickets and attend the Chili Bowl, where teams of four set up booths and offer samples of their best recipes. Three judges, including a physician from Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital and two Millsaps representatives, determine first- and second-place winners. Attendees cast their ballots for the People's Choice Award.

"Chili Bowl is Sigma Alpha Epsilon's philanthropy event in which every member of the fraternity works collectively for its success," said Alex Zhu, who is in charge of organizing this year's contest. "I know we, as a fraternity, are humbled to be part of such a rewarding experience, and judging by the fact that almost all of the teams that participate in Chili Bowl are student organized, I'd say that they enjoy the event as well."

Last year, the efforts of 18 teams and contributions from the community raised $7,000 for Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children, which is located across the street from the Millsaps campus. "We try to get as much community participation as possible," Zhu said.

In the last year, Batson Hospital averaged 9,000 admissions, and more than 150,000 children from all of Mississippi's 82 counties were treated in its clinics and emergency room. No child is ever turned away for any reason.

This year's Chili Bowl event is scheduled March 2 at 11 a.m. in the Plaza as part of Spring Family Weekend. For a line up of the weekend's activities, click here. For more information about sponsorships, donations, or participation in Chili Bowl, visit chilibowl.webs.com.
