Student Profile: Emily Simmons, Class of 2015

January 14, 2012

Emily SimmonsIt seems a natural fit for Emily Simmons to study art history at Millsaps considering that her family owns Brown's Fine Art and Framing, one of the art galleries in the nearby Fondren neighborhood.

Simmons reached into the community to work as an intern with local artist Josh Hailey and the organization he founded, HeARTalot.

"I mainly worked with helping to invite people to many of the events that were held via e-mail and Facebook, assisting with the free art classes for HeARTalot, finding people to sponsor the final PhotAmerica show and Photoshopping images to prepare them for Josh's PhotAmerica show," she said. "I really enjoyed the impact that it made on the community in such a small amount of time. It was great to see people get involved. The classes and meetings grew larger and larger every week."

Simmons, a junior who is majoring in studio art and art history with a concentration on museum studies, plans to work in the museums field and eventually attend graduate school in art conservation.

A campus visit led her to choose Millsaps and now she's quick to say that she has yet to meet a professor on campus that she doesn't like. "Even if it's a course I have no interest in, the teachers make me love it because they're so passionate about what they teach," she said.
