This article, written by Ana Marie Cox and Alex P. Kellogg, appeared in the October 5, 2001, edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Like father, like daughter: When Frances Lucas-Tauchar became Millsaps College's first female president, in July 2000, she followed in the footsteps of her father, Aubrey K. Lucas, who served as president of the University of Southern Mississippi from 1975 to 1997.

Now, Mr. Lucas, 68, has come out of semi-retirement to reclaim Southern Mississippi's presidency, setting up what may be the first time a father and daughter have served concurrently as college presidents . . .

. . . Mr. Lucas and Ms. Lucas-Tauchar now find themselves in a friendly battle over students and donors. "Mississippi is not a large state," says Mr. Lucas. "So I'm careful not to solicit gifts from her primary benefactors." He says he has also been careful not to assume his daughter wants to know what he's up to, and he rarely offers her any tips on her job.

. . . Ms. Lucas-Tauchar . . . says she was ecstatic to hear her father would be taking on the interim presidency at Southern Mississippi . . .
