Moak Wins
Outstanding Young Faculty Award Assistant Professor of Music Elizabeth Moak has received the 2001 Outstanding Young Faculty Award at Millsaps. The award seeks to recognize promising, untenured faculty by offering them a scholarly stipend and release time in which to develop their teaching, scholarship, or artistic accomplishments. Candidates for the award must show evidence of noteworthy teaching, exceptional promise for scholarly or artistic accomplishments, and serious attention to the duties and responsibilities of a faculty member. In addition to appearing as soloist with orchestras and as collaborator in chamber music recitals, Moak has given more than 90 solo recitals throughout the United States and in Europe; many of these performances have been broadcast nationally and may be heard frequently on Public Radio in Mississippi. She earned a Bachelor and Master of Music in Piano Performance from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University and a Diplôme de Virtuosité (Artist Diploma) with highest honors from the Conservatoire de Musique in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. I feel extremely privileged not only to be chosen for this honor, but also to be able to spend a life in music, said Moak. Although the life of a musician is tremendously challenging, it is also full of wonderful and enriching experiences. It is especially gratifying to give back by teaching in my home state of Mississippi. Moak plans to use her release time to undertake concerts and lectures in France and Switzerland and to further her repertory of American compositions and works from Mississippi. Professor Moak has worked tirelessly to improve the level of quality and enrollment in the piano program at Millsaps. Many of her student have gone on to win awards and recognition in area and state competitions, said Vice President and Dean of the College Richard Smith.
