Millsaps College is one of the nation’s best institutions for undergraduate education, according to The Princeton Review. The New York-based education services company known for its test-prep courses features the college in the just-published 2009 edition of its annual book, “The Best 368 Colleges.”
“It is delightfully affirming when others recognize the Millsaps College student-focused atmosphere,” said Dr. Frances Lucas, president of Millsaps. “To be named repeatedly to the ‘Best’ list confirms Millsaps College’s success in creating compassionate global leaders.”
Only about 15 percent of America’s 2,500 four-year colleges and two Canadian colleges are in the book.
In its profile of Millsaps, The Princeton Review quotes extensively from Millsaps students surveyed for the book. Among the students’ comments on the college: “At last, a college where ‘The brochures are true! The classes are not too big, the instructors love what they do (and do it well), upperclassmen are helpful, and the out-of-class experience is fun.’ ”
The Princeton Review ranked Millsaps in the top 20 “town-gown relations are great” category, which focuses on positive relations with the city and neighborhoods surrounding campus.
The Princeton Review also recognized in its “major frat and sorority scene” category that Greeks are active on campus and contribute through volunteerism, fund-raising, leadership and social life.
Robert Franek, Princeton Review's vice president for publishing, said in a release that schools featured in the book were selected because of outstanding academics.
“In our opinion, each school in this book is first-rate academically,” he said. “But their campus cultures and offerings differ greatly.”
In past years, The Princeton Review has included Millsaps in the list of “Best Southeastern Colleges” and has acknowledged Millsaps for “Class Discussions Encouraged” and as a “Best Value.”
Millsaps, which was the first college in the state to earn a chapter of the prestigious honorary Phi Beta Kappa, has received recognition for its community service, its bio-cultural reserve in Yucatan, its history of Rhodes Scholars and student athletes who receive academic accolades.
