Greg Iles of Natchez was honored with a Doctor of Humane Letters during Millsaps College’s commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 10.
Iles was the commencement speaker for Millsaps College’s 114th commencement and urged the graduates not to put off what they want to achieve in life, to work at something they love and to not do the same thing until they retire. He also urged them to be proud of their Southern and Mississippi roots.
“You as a generation are going to be tested,” Iles said in the outdoor ceremony in the Bowl. “There are no simple answers and you must learn to trust yourself.”
During the ceremony, Iles was honored with the Doctor of Humane Letters for his unique voice in contemporary fiction.
“While talent abounds in our fair state, Greg Iles is a unique force in contemporary fiction. He has not been defined by one particular genre, but many. His work is not formulaic, so you can count on the next volume to be every bit as captivating as the one before,” said Millsaps College President Dr. Frances Lucas during the outdoor ceremony.
