Millsaps Professor Takes Part in Welty Centennial Celebration in New York

(11/05/08)

The year-long centennial celebration of Eudora Welty’s life and work kicks off this week in New York City with Dr. Suzanne Marrs, Millsaps College Welty Foundation Scholar-in-Residence, moderating a panel of America’s most distinguished writers about the connection between Welty’s writings and photographs.

The literary symposium, sponsored by the Museum of the City of New York and the Welty Foundation, heralds the remounting of Welty’s first photo exhibit in New York in 1936. Eudora Welty in New York: Photographs of the Early 1930s will be on display at the Museum of the City of New York from Nov. 7, 2008 to Feb. 16, 2009.

Marrs, author of Eudora Welty: A Biography will moderate a roundtable discussion on Thursday, Nov. 6, that includes Richard Ford, Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist; Robert MacNeil, journalist and former co-host of "MacNeil/Lehrer News Hour"; and Reynolds Price, novelist and recipient of the National Book Critics Circle Award.

The symposium and photography exhibit are the first in a year-long series of events to celebrate the Eudora Welty Centennial, 1909-2009. In January, Marrs will teach a continuing education Great Topics Seminar “Eudora Welty and Friends” at Millsaps College. Other events include a statewide reading project, “Mississippi Reads,” featuring Welty’s Collected Stories and a Eudora Welty New Play Series at New State Theatre.
