Eudora Welty was admired both for her writing and for the strong friendships that she developed throughout her lifetime. In celebration of her centennial birthday, Millsaps College will offer a special seminar to discuss three of the most powerful friendships in her life.
Beginning in January, Millsaps College will host a semester-long seminar Eudora Welty and Friends as part of the Great Topics Seminars: Graduate Studies in the Humanities and Sciences. The seminar will reflect on the connection between friendship and language.
Suzanne Marrs, Welty Foundation scholar-in-residence at Millsaps, will teach the class that will examine the relations and intertextual connections in the work of friends and authors Eudora Welty, Elizabeth Bowen, Reynolds Price and Ross Macdonald.
“Teaching a Great Topics Seminar is one of the great rewards of being a Millsaps faculty member,” Marrs said. “This is a course for readers who love fiction and readers who love biography. We’ll read letters Welty and her friends wrote to each other, we’ll examine the role friendship played in their careers as writers and we’ll discuss connections between their stories and novels.”
Welty was known for her lasting friendships and her magical use of language was often both the spark for and the result of her friendships.
“These semester long classes engage community volunteers and leaders in stimulating reading assignments and conversations about current events, historical events and varying topics in literature,” said Nola Gibson, director of continuing education at Millsaps.
Established in 1988 and made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Leadership Seminars in the Humanities bring together Millsaps professors in the humanities with corporate, volunteer and professional leaders in the community.
The class can be taken for four hours of graduate credit or as a non-credit course. The application deadline is Dec. 1. For more information contact Nola Gibson at 601-974-1130 or gibsonk@millsaps.edu.
