Opportunities Abound in Millsaps' Enrichment Courses

(09/11/08)

Hollywood movies and reality TV shows have put ballroom dancing back in the spotlight. From the waltz to the fox trot and the tango to cha-cha, Jackson area residents are putting on their dance shoes.

“The most popular dances tend to be the rhythm dances like swing or cha-cha that transcend all types of music,” said Mike Day, who is teaching Introduction to Ballroom Dancing with his wife, Lisa, as part of Millsaps College’s Enrichment Series this fall.

“Enrichment classes are a great way to get exposed to something without a long term commitment,” Day said.

While ballroom dancing has been a long-time favorite of enrichment class students, there are plenty of options for anyone who wants to learn a new skill or try out a new hobby.

This fall Millsaps College Community Enrichment Series will offer more than 60 enrichment classes. The noncredit classes include many long-time favorites of local residents and several new classes.

The fall lineup includes a broad range of subjects from belly dancing to fiction writing—genealogy to kitchen design—the classes run the gamut. Most classes begin the week of Sept. 22.

“Enrichment classes enrich your life in many ways-you can learn a new skill or hobby, get fit or centered, organize your life, get familiar with language before a trip, or learn basic self defense techniques,” said Nola Gibson, director of enrichment and special projects at Millsaps College.

“Along the way, you’ll meet some great people and your world view will broaden a bit with each experience in lifelong learning.”

Among new classes this fall are Science Fair Tutorial for Parents, How to Sell What You Write, Why We Fail and How to Succeed at Anything, Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Mississippi Authors, The Healing Power of Dreams, Looking Great on a Budget-Makeover Your Wardrobe, Mississippi’s Musical Legacy, Effective Presentation Skills for Business Professionals, Advanced Stock Market Strategy, and When the Unthinkable Happens: Gaining Financial Control of Your Divorce.

Registration is ongoing and can be done by phone by calling the Millsaps Office of Continuing Education at 601-974-1130. For a complete schedule go to: www.millsaps.edu/conted
