Looking for something for your children to do this summer? Consider summer enrichment classes at Millsaps College.
Classes for children from ages 7-13 range from acting to cheer basics. Classes for students in grades 7-12 range from beginning guitar to digital photography. For more information, phone the Office of Continuing Education at 601-974-1130.
Classes include:
- Writing in College, a two-day workshop for students in grades 10-12. Students will learn strategies for writing, revision, writing for exams and writing for varying audiences. The workshop is scheduled from 9 a.m. until noon June 8 and 10. Cost is $80.
- Acting Up, a five-day workshop for youngsters ages 8-12. The workshop will include acting and improvisational games, an introduction to stage-fighting, creating skits, and more. The workshop will meet from 9 a.m. until noon June 8-12. Cost is $150.
- Elementary Entrepreneurs, a three-week series for youngsters ages 8-12. Students will discover the importance of cooperation, marshal creative and analytical resources, practice setting and achieving financial goals and learn how to make money. The class meets from 12:30-3:30 p.m. June 8-26. Cost is $300.
- Adventures in Art, a three-week class for youngsters in grades 4-8. In this nine-day camp, students will make a papier-mâché mask and create one-of-a-kind needlepoint and string art designs. The class meets from 9:30 a.m. until noon Monday, Wednesday and Friday June 8-26. Cost is $125.
- MathFest 2009 for students in grades 10-12. Students work on algebra skills in preparation for the Advanced Placement calculus exam and further concentrate on algebra for the Advanced Placement statistics exam. Students will work actual Advanced Placement exam questions and learn test-taking techniques. The class will meet from 9 a.m. until noon June 8-12. Cost is $90.
- Be A Nature Detective, a class for youngsters ages 8-13. Students will get close and personal with worms, insects, seashells, bird feathers, flowers and more. They will study nature up close using a jeweler’s loupe and The Private Eye® program. The class will meet from 9 a.m. until noon June 9-11. Cost is $80.
- Cheer Dance Basics, a one-week camp for children ages 7-13 that will teach the fundamentals of cheerleading and pom squad dance. This camp is for beginners and also for recreational and school cheerleaders interested in jazz and hip hop dance techniques. The camp is scheduled from 9 a.m. until noon June 15-19. Cost is $85.
- Summer Guitar Workshop, instruction for beginners ages 13-17. The workshop will teach basic note reading, how to strum chords and other acoustic guitar fundamentals. Students will learn how to play songs in both solo and group settings. The class will meet from 10-11:30 a.m. June 15-19. Cost is $80.
- Digital Photography, a four-day workshop that will teach students in grades 7-12 how to take the best possible picture from start-to-finish. Each student will need a digital camera. The workshop will meet from 10 a.m. until noon June 22-25 at Blaylock Fine Art Photography Studio in Ridgeland. Cost is $100.
- Character Animation Workshop, a three-day workshop for youngsters ages 10-14. Students will learn about character design, developing a storyboard, forming a soundtrack and basic movements that bring to life cartoon creation. The workshop will meet from 8:30 a.m. until noon June 23-25 at Jackson Academy. Cost is $80.
- Chamber Music Day Camp for string, piano and voice students in grades 7-12. The camp is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. June 29-July 3. Cost is $225. Contact Rachel Heard (heardr@millsaps.edu or 601-974-1420) about admission requirements for this camp.
- Introduction to 3D Modeling and Interactive Worlds, a two-week computer workshop for students in grades 8-12. It will meet from 10-11:15 a.m. July 20-31. Cost is $175.
