(04/07/09)

Chocolate expert Dr. Jeffrey Hurst will be the next speaker at Millsaps College’s Moreton Lecture Series on Thursday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gertrude C. Ford Academic Complex room 215. He will speak on the ways ancient people used cacao and review recent health related findings on cocoa consumption.

Hurst, principal scientist at the Hershey Company Technical Center, will present a history of cocoa in his lecture “Cacao: Everything Old is New Again.” The presentation will include information on how Hurst discovered the method of identifying cacao from ancient pottery and his research on the topic at archaeological sites in Mesoamerica and in New Mexico.

Earlier this year, Hurst was part of a research team that linked traces of chocolate from 1,000 year old pottery found in New Mexico’s Chaco Canyon to cacao growers in Central America. The discovery indicates an extensive trade route and that Native Americans in the present day American Southwest were drinking drinks made from cacao beans long before previously thought.

The Moreton Lectures were established in 1986 by Robert and Alma Moreton. This series of lectures in the sciences is marked by experts with national reputations. For more information, contact George Bey at 601-974-1385 or beygj@millsaps.edu
