Millsaps College will host Phi Beta Kappa national speaker and scholar Jean Comaroff on Thursday, Nov. 5 for a free public lecture, “Nations with/out Borders: the Problem of Belonging in Africa, and Beyond.”
The lecture begins at 7 p.m. in the Millsaps College Leggett Center.
Comaroff is a Distinguished Service Professor of Anthropology and Social Sciences at the University of Chicago and is the recipient of two Quantrell Awards for excellence in teaching. Her research on colonialism, globalization, and modernity, much of it carried out in South Africa and Botswana, focuses on the body, healing, and religious practice. She has given endowed lectures throughout the U.S. and abroad and held numerous visiting professorships.
She is the author of Body of Power, Spirit of Resistance: The Culture and History of a South African People; and the co-author or co-editor with John Comaroff of Of Revelation and Revolution Vol. I: Christianity, Colonialism and Consciousness in South Africa; Of Revelation and Revolution Vol. II: The Dialectics of Modernity on a South African Frontier; Modernity and Its Malcontents: Ritual and Power in Africa; and Law and Disorder in the Postcolony.
Comaroff comes to Millsaps as part of the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Program and is a Phi Beta Kappa Frank M. Updike Memorial Scholar. In 1989, Millsaps College became the first college or university in Mississippi to be awarded a Phi Beta Kappa chapter. The purpose of the Visiting Scholar program is to contribute to the intellectual life of the campus by making possible an exchange of ideas between the visiting scholars and the resident faculty and students. Visiting scholars meet informally with students and faculty members, take part in classroom discussions and give a public lecture. Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest academic honor society. It has chapters at 276 colleges and universities, and over 600,000 members.
