John K. Osoinach Jr., new assistant professor of mathematics at Millsaps College, was awarded the Carl B. Allendoerfer Award on Aug. 11, 2006, at the Summer MathFest in Knoxville, Tenn. Osoinach earned his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1998 and has taught at Eureka College and Hampden-Sydney College. He will begin his position at Millsaps College in the fall of 2006.
The Allendoerfer Award recognized Osoinach and Robb T. Koether, professor of mathematics and computer science at Hampden-Sydney College, for their article entitled “Outwitting the Lying Oracle,” which appeared in Mathematics Magazine.
Established in 1976, the Carl B. Allendoerfer Awards, which include a citation and a cash prize, are presented by the Mathematical Association of America for articles of expository excellence published in Mathematics Magazine.
