MILLSAPS WINS UNITED WAY COLLEGE CHALLENGE

(8/9/06)

Millsaps College was recently named the winner of the United Way College Challenge. The Challenge winner is the college or university that has the greatest percentage of employee participation during the United Way campaign.

The United Way kicks off a fundraising campaign each September and sets a goal to motivate giving. United Way representatives go into workplaces to give employees and institutions the opportunity to give and make a difference in their community.

The College Challenge started during the United Way’s 2003-2004 campaign, and Millsaps College was named the first winner. After a one-year stop at Mississippi College, the traveling trophy returns to Millsaps this year.

At Millsaps, employee participation in the fundraising campaign nearly doubled to 33% participation in the 2005-2006 campaign from 17.2% in the previous year. The school’s 2005-2006 figure beat out Mississippi College’s 28.4% participation rate and gave Millsaps their victory.

Nola Gibson, director of Enrichment and Special Projects, headed the Millsaps committee, which included Martha Lee, assistant to the dean in the Else School of Management; Don Fortenberry, former chaplain of the College; and Janice Jordan, administrative assistant to the Core Office. Wanda Manor of the Continuing Education Department recorded the gifts as they came in.
