James Martin, a member of the adjunct faculty of the Millsaps performing arts department, will give a faculty artist recital on Thursday, October 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Ford Academic Complex Recital Hall on campus. Martin, a baritone, has won critical acclaim for his performances in opera and concert as a versatile singer/actor and entertainer, with an artistic repertoire that spans from Bach to be-bop, Britten to Burleigh and Berg to Bernstein. He has appeared to reviews of the highest acclaim with leading musical organizations throughout the United States and abroad.
Martin’s program will include musical portraits of European composers Monteverdi, Schubert, Debussy and Poulenc, as well as favorites from North-American songwriters Joni Mitchell and Stephen Sondheim, and songs and spirituals of Hall Johnson. He will be accompanied by Rachel Heard on fortepiano, David O’Steen and Ben Tomlinson on piano, and Jimmy Turner on guitar.
