Spong to Spark Discussion
The Dykes Foundation and the Department of Religious Studies will cosponsor a seminar this weekend (Oct. 20-21) entitled “What Is Christianity Really About: Guilt and Control or Life and Grace?” with keynote speaker Bishop John Shelby Spong. Millsaps College does not endorse Spong and his beliefs, but prides itself on encouraging the free expression of ideas. Neither students, faculty or staff are required to attend this event, which is planned as a community forum, but all are welcome.
As a Methodist-affiliated academic institution, Millsaps College seeks to serve both the church and the community by providing access to a broad array of viewpoints. The College has a long history of speakers on campus who represent varying beliefs from across the religious spectrum, and Millsaps encourages the community—both on and off campus—to engage in constructive discussion from all sides about these speakers and the ideas they represent.
Pre-registration for the seminar is now closed, but seats are still available and may be registered and paid for at the door. For more information, please see www.faithandreason.org or contact the Dykes Foundation at 800-882-7424.
