Urban PictureThe Lewis Art Gallery at Millsaps College will host a solo exhibition of oil paintings and works on paper by SusanMaakestad beginning Monday, September 24. The exhibition, entitled “Urban Abstraction,” is free and open to the public. Contact Sandra Murchison at 601-974-1431 or smiths@millsaps.edu for more information.

Maakestad is associate professor of art at Memphis College of Art in Memphis, Tenn. “I am interested in the spaces between things, the unnoticed marginal spaces in the urban landscape,” she says in her artist statement. “Likewise, as a painter I like painting in that precarious place between abstraction and naturalism. I find inspiration in ordinary urban places such as parking lots and intersections.”
