Millsaps
College proudly announces the inaugural season of the Bell Concert Series.
The eclectic new performing arts series features piano performances by
a diverse array of solo artists and chamber ensembles specializing in
classical music, jazz and more. The series is named for and presented
in memory of Mrs. Estelle Bell, grandmother of U.S. Ambassador to Portugal
John Palmer.
"We
are so pleased to present a series of this quality to the Jackson public,"
said Timothy Coker, chair of the Millsaps department of performing arts.
"The series is about celebrating the joy of piano music, and we have
scheduled some very impressive artists for our first season."
This
year's schedule is as follows:
September 20 - Cyrus Chestnut, famed Lincoln Center jazz artist
November
1 - Robert Taub, internationally acclaimed classical soloist with
renowned composer Milton Babbitt
January
29 - the José White String Quartet, a group of Cuban-born musicians,
presented with Millsaps faculty artist Lynn Raley in a piano quintet performance
February
21 - the Wideman Piano Competition winner, an international young
pianist of the next generation
The performances
are complemented by educational programs, including presentations in public
schools, pre-concert lectures and master classes for advanced students.
Through high-quality performances and inspiring programs, the series will
encourage piano study, renew excitement about piano music and provide
opportunities to enjoy the work of the music world's foremost artists.
