Kenneth
Townsend of Kosciusko, a junior majoring in political science and
English at Millsaps, didn't think he would win all three of the
scholarships he applied for last spring. As it happens, though,
Townsend finds himself beginning the new school year at Millsaps
with more than enough money to pay for tuition, supplies and living
expenses. His initiative, leadership skills and good academic record
were recognized with three competitive scholarships this summer:
a Datatel Scholarship, a Phi Eta Sigma Scholarship and a Fund for
Theological Education Fellowship.
Townsend
applied for the Datatel Scholarship through the Millsaps
Office of Financial Aid. These scholarships are awarded
to a select number of students studying at more than
600 colleges and universities nationwide. The Board
of Directors of the Datatel Scholars Foundation selects
recipients on the basis of extracurricular activities,
accomplishments and letters of recommendation.
Townsend
serves as vice-president for the Millsaps chapter of
Phi Eta Sigma Scholarship, an honorary that recognizes
academic excellence in freshmen. When he heard that
the organization awarded scholarships to officers and
upperclassmen members, he applied for and received an
award from it as well.
Lastly,
Townsend learned in April that his application to the
Fund for Theological Education had resulted in a fellowship
with the organization. FTE awards fellowships to college
students who demonstrate superior academic achievement
and exceptional promise for ministry, with the aims
of introducing them to theological education and encouraging
their vocational discernment. This year, the organization
honored only 70 students in America with these prestigious
fellowships.
Overall,
Townsend earned almost $5,000 in additional scholarship
money during the late spring and early summer. Not bad
for filling out a few forms.
Townsend
is a member of Sigma Lambda (a service and leadership
honorary), the Millsaps Student Body Association, the
Campus Ministry Team, E.A.R.T.H., the Multicultural
Affairs Diversity Group and the Millsaps Black Student
Association. He is a volunteer for the campus chapter
of Habitat for Humanity, and he was named Freshman Man
of the Year for 2000-2001. During the fall 2002 semester,
Townsend will also play the position of point guard
for the Millsaps Majors basketball team. After graduation,
he intends to pursue a law degree. He is the son of
Lane and Janice Townsend of Kosciusko.
