The Millsaps Singers
will ring in the holiday season with their annual Christmas concert Dec.
12 and 13. The concert, which will feature traditional Christmas carols
and religious hymns, will take place in the Gertrude C. Ford Academic
Complex recital hall.
Rousing renditions
of familiar carols such as Deck the Halls, I Saw Three Ships,
O Little Town of Bethlehem, Beautiful Savior and Angels We
Have Heard on High are staples of the program. Religious hymns
will also be presented, including Hodie, Christus Natus Est
by Healey Willan and two versions of the classic Ave Maria.
The Mississippi
Girlchoir will perform with the Millsaps Singers, and accompaniment
for the concert includes a handbell ensemble, a celeste and conga
drums in addition to the traditional organ and piano. Readings on
peace, joy, humility and hope interspersed throughout the program
will provide a change of pace and encourage reflection on the true
meaning of the season.
"The setting
for this year's concert will be entirely different from what our
audiences have seen before at our Christmas concerts," said
Dr. Timothy Coker, director of the Millsaps Singers and chair of
the department of performing arts. "A dazzling mural and special
lighting have been created to add to the festive spirit of the performance."
The concert
will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on both days, and is free and open
to the public. For more information, call (601) 974-1422.
