The outlook of the Southeastern economy in the wake
of hurricanes Katrina and Rita will be the topic of the
Else School of Management’s 2005 Business Forum,
to be held Thursday, Nov. 17, in the Leggett Special
Events Center on the Millsaps College campus.
The forum will begin at 7:45 a.m. with a breakfast buffet,
followed at 8:30 by greeting and introductions by Howard
McMillan Jr., the Else School executive in residence.
Speakers will begin their presentations at 8:45, which
will be followed by a question and answer session. The
forum will conclude at 10:15. Tickets are $20 per person.
Seating is limited and reservations are recommended.
For reservations or more information, contact Martha
Lee at 601-974-1250.
The engaging slate of speakers representing the banking,
technology and real estate industries will provide insight
on the economic future of Mississippi and the Southeast.
Speakers include Dr. Thomas Cunningham, vice president
and associate director of research, Atlanta Federal Reserve
Bank; John Palmer, founder and former CEO of SkyTel and
former U.S. ambassador to Portugal; and Leland Speed,
executive director of the Mississippi Development Authority.
Cunningham is responsible for the Atlanta Fed’s
research department, including oversight of the Economic
Review. Prior to his appointment as Associate Director
of Research, he was responsible for both the regional
and Latin American teams. Cunningham joined the bank
as an economist with the macropolicy group in 1985, specializing
in macroeconomics and monetary theory. Cunningham had
previously worked as an instructor of economics at Barnard
College at Columbia University.
A native Mississippian and former U.S. Ambassador to
Portugal, Palmer is an entrepreneur, telecommunications
pioneer, community leader and venture capitalist. Prior
to his appointment as ambassador in 2001, he was the
chairman of GulfSouth Capital in Jackson—a position
he holds today—and served as the chairman of SkyTel
Communications from its founding in 1989 until its sale
to MCI WorldCom in 1999.
In addition to serving as the Mississippi Development
Authority’s Executive Director, Leland Speed is
founder and chairman of Parkway Properties and EastGroup
Properties, both NYSE-listed companies located in Jackson.
At the Mississippi Development Authority, Speed helps
Mississippi’s existing businesses grow while attracting
new companies to the state.
According to Dr. Ken Harmon, dean of the Else School
of Management: “The Else School has an obligation
to be on the forefront of contemporary business issues
facing the Southeastern United States. Naturally, the
business community is concerned about the effect of the
recent hurricanes on the Southeastern economy. We are
therefore hosting a forum featuring three prominent,
highly respected business leaders who will share their
wisdom and insights on this topic.”
This event is sponsored by Brunini, Grantham, Grower & Hewes, Cellular South,
The Clarion Ledger, and Trustmark National Bank.
