Millsaps
College student Kenneth Townsend, a senior majoring in political
science and English, has been selected as one of 32 American men
and women as Rhodes Scholars.
A Truman Scholar and Ford Foundation
fellow, Townsend is also student body president at Millsaps College,
a leader in many campus organizations, plays four intramural sports
and is council-wide co-chair of the Campus Ministry Team.
Townsend and his fellow scholars will
enter the University of Oxford in England next October, almost exactly
one hundred years after the first class of American Rhodes Scholars
did in 1904. The Rhodes Scholarships, oldest of the international
study awards available to any American students, were created in
1902 by Cecil Rhodes, British philanthropist and colonial pioneer.
The scholarships provide for two or three years of study at Oxford,
where Townsend will study political theory.
