| Millsaps
College's community is made up of approximately 1,400 students and
300 staff and faculty members, and each one of these campus members
has an interesting story to tell. No wonder, then, that the area media
would be interested in pursuing stories about the people on campus.
The purpose of the Millsaps Office of Public Relations is to promote
the college's people, programs, and events to area journalists in
a positive light. We exist to help "get the word out" about your news
and to offer assistance, when asked, on the most appropriate way to
respond to a journalist's query.
Although many people tremble
at the idea of speaking to the media, working with journalists
can certainly be painless and even fun. Proper preparation
helps, and so does knowing the benefits of positive
media coverage:
- Reaching out to a classroom
of thousands through newspapers, television, and radio
supports the college's ideals of teaching and public
service.
- When alumni and other
community members see recurring coverage of campus
events, they feel more connected to the campus and
are more likely to invest their time and funds in
the future of Millsaps.
- Public perception of
the college's credibility is influenced by news coverage
of the campus and how faculty, administrators, and
staff announce news and respond to reporter inquiries.
- Publicity for an event
has the possiblity of driving ticket sales, increasing
awareness, and recruiting new volunteers for both
your current program and future events.
- Popular press accounts
often boost the attention research journal articles
receive and further promote the researcher/academic
as an expert in his/her field.
