Angela Cheng was born in Hong Kong and received her Bachelor of Music degree from The Juilliard School, and her Master of Music degree from Indiana University, where she was a student of Menahem Pressler. In 1986 Cheng was the Gold Medal winner at the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition; in 1988 she was the first Canadian to win the prestigious Montreal International Piano Competition. In the same year, the Canada Council awarded Cheng its coveted Career Development Grant. For her interpretations of Mozart, she received the Medal of Excellence at the Mozarteum in Salzburg in 1991. In the United States, Cheng has appeared as soloist with the symphony orchestras of Boston, St. Louis, Houston, Indianapolis, Utah, Syracuse, New Orleans, Grand Rapids and Honolulu. Outside of the U.S. she has appeared with the Israel Philharmonic and every major orchestra in Canada. She has performed as solo recitalist and in chamber groups throughout North America and Europe. Cheng has recorded on Koch International and CBC Records.
