The
remarkable Melvin Chen is a true polymath,
having earned master's degrees in both violin and piano from the Juilliard School,
a double Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and physics from Yale, and a
doctorate in chemistry from Harvard. He studied piano with Seymour Lipkin and
Boris Berman, and violin
with Paul Kantor, Glenn Dicterow, and Ida Kavafian.
As a pianist he has been acclaimed for performances throughout the U.S. and in
major venues such as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, Weill
Recital Hall, the Frick Collection, the Kennedy Center, and Boston's Jordan Hall.
He has also performed extensively in Europe and Asia. Chen
is an enthusiastic chamber musician as well as a solo performer, and he is on
the roster of the renowned Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York.
He regularly appears at major music festivals, including Chautauqua, the Norfolk
Chamber Music Festival, the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, Chamber
Music Northwest, the Bard Music Festival, and Music from Angel Fire. As
a chamber player has collaborated with such well-known artists as Ida Kavafian,
Pamela Frank, Peter Wiley, Robert White, David Schifrin, and Steven Tenenbom,
as well as members of the Arditti, Orion, Mendelssohn, St. Lawrence, Miami and
Borromeo string quartets. Chen can be
seen on Wynton Marsalis' music education DVD series, "Marsalis on Music"
and can be heard on Discover, Nices, and KBS label compact disks with violinist
Juliette Kang. He is on the Yale University piano faculty and is a visiting professor
at Bard College. |
