An early
Italian cantata written by G. F. Handel and performed with harpsichord and cello
continuo open the recital, while the Italian aria "O luce di quest'anima"
from Donizetti's opera Linda di Chamounix closes the program.
Franz
Schubert's setting of The Shepherd on the Rock combines voice, clarinet and keyboard
in a musical dialogue expressing the shepherd's thoughts of the joy and sadness
of life. The next section is comprised of two arias from Spanish opera (zarzuela)
which is somewhat akin to musical theatre in style.
A
group of poems by Emily Dickinson set to music make the fourth group. Four of
the six included in the recital were written by Mississippi composer Dr. James
Sclater for voice and clarinet.
