PRACTICE EXPECTATIONS

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR CONCENTRATORS

The minimum number of hours you are expected to devote to the piano is six hours weekly if enrolled for one credit (a thirty minute lesson), twelve hours weekly if enrolled for two credits (an hour lesson). This is understood as one hour per day for one hour of academic credit, and two hours per day for two hours of credit. Avoid cramming two days before a lesson. It doesn't work. Only in this way will you progress as a musician. Practice logs will be collected at each lesson.

Practice Log: All students are required to record time spent practicing. You may use the practice log sheet I provide or just use a piece of notebook paper and keep track of how you are using your time in the practice room. Document the amount of time that you spend practicing on each piece. Be honest for my sake and yours! I will collect these practice logs at each lesson and use them when deciding on your overall semester grade. I will also be giving you a separate grade for each of your lessons. This grade will be based partly on your practice log and how well you've spent your time during the week.

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS: All students are required to study and polish several pieces over the course of the academic year (fall and spring semester). The exact number will depend on the level at which you are studying. (All incoming students should refer to the new performance standards handout.) These pieces will be from the traditional keyboard literature and will be from contrasting style periods (i.e. - Baroque, Classic, Romantic and Impressionistic/Twentieth Century), unless you are a beginner-level student.
