WRITING PROJECTS

Final Project: Your Final Project will be a formal research paper, the result of your semester-long study of a particular area of interest having to do with the Middle Ages. The paper should be from 8-10 pp. in length, plus Bibliography and title pages. Your topic choice will not be restricted to music, but if your topic is not music, you must find a place for it within the framework of this course (Spirituality/Mysticism, The Crusades, Islamic/Arabic influences on Europe, Medieval philosophy, etc.). Another possibility is a paper which focuses on the life and work of an important person who lived in the Middle Ages (Eleanor of Aquitaine, Thomas Aquinas, St. Francis of Assisi, Hildegard, etc.). BEGIN THINKING ABOUT POSSIBLE TOPIC CHOICES EARLY IN THE SEMESTER. You must submit a formal Topic Proposal (with a clear thesis along with a preliminary working Bibliography) before gaining approval for a topic. You will turn in a first draft to me after having gone over it once with a tutor at the Writing Center. I will then return your draft with comments and suggestions. This assignment will be assessed by the Writing Center for inclusion in your Writing Portfolio.

ACADEMIC HONESTY

The college policy on Academic Honesty will be strictly followed in this course. All work must be your own. Plagiarism is intellectual theft and will not be tolerated. In your Final Project, follow proper documentation styles (for this course: Chicago Style), providing footnotes when you use another person’s words or ideas, whether quoted or paraphrased. It is your responsibility to KNOW what plagiarism is and how to avoid it.
