WRITING
PROJECTS
Informal
and Reflective Writings
At
various times you may be called upon to reflect
upon what we've been studying or listening to.
Some writings will be reaction papers, others
will involve creative ways to clarify your experience
as a listener. When you attend a concert, in
order to get credit, you must submit a CONCERT
REPORT.
After
viewing Immortal Beloved you will write
a thoughtful essay that examines its assumptions
about -- and its implicit stance toward -- Beethoven
and Romanticism.
For
this course, you are REQUIRED to attend a live
opera performance, this year Puccini's La
Boheme. [Saturday, Nov. 10, 7:30
pm at Thalia Mara Hall in downtown Jackson]
To get credit for your attendance, you will write
a three-page (double-spaced) paper about your
experience.
The
Formal Research Paper
Your
final project will be a formal research paper,
the result of extensive research in an area you
are interested in that is related to Romanticism.
Two drafts will be turned in to me prior to your
final revision. Body of the text should be between
7 and 10 pages, and the paper should have a cover
sheet, title page and Bibliography. It should
be computer-printed in 12 point font (preferably
Times
New Roman),
double-spaced, with footnotes in
Chicago
Style, the standard for music and history.
FINAL DRAFT DUE
TUESDAY DECEMBER 4th
You
need not limite your topic to music, but it is
important that you place your topic within the
framework of Romanticism. You will submit a formal
topic proposal (with thesis and preliminary working
bibliography) to get approval for
your topic.
The
college policy on Academic Honesty will be strictly
followed. All work must be your own. Where you
use another person's ideas, you must clearly
give credit. Violation of this trust will result
in an appearance before the Honors Council.
