Syllabus History of Jazz WRITING PROJECTS You
will keep a listening journal, recording your listening experiences in
jazz during the semester. Use a bound spiral composition book devoted exclusively
to this purpose. (Less tempting than a spiral notebook to use for other
purposes.) Bring your journal to every class, since on some days I will
ask you to write in it. Date all your entries, writing continuously (not
beginning with a new page for each day). The entries should appear in the
order you write them. JAZZ ORAL RESEARCH PROJECT Toward the end of the semester you will present an oral report on a research project in jazz. This must first be submitted in written format, which is expected to be more detailed than your oral presentation. Your paper must be fully documented, with proper citations for each source. Use recordings in your presentation to illustrate major points in your talk. Choose from the following categories: The recorded work of an artist An investigation into a particular style Jazz theory or improvisational approaches |
