THEORETICAL SKILLS (Graded)

The actual grade that you will receive in this class will reflect your understanding of the theoretical aspects of your study. Daily assignments must be turned in at the stated time. Partwriting Tests are designed to allow you to demonstrate your new skills immediately following study. The Final Exam will be cumulative.

Budget plenty of time to complete your assignments. Mastery requires large blocks of time! Grades on assignments turned in late will be reduced by 5% per class day. Allow an average of two hours per class session for work outside class time, especially as the work becomes more advanced later in the semester. Please design a work schedule for your homework in this class. (Treat each work session as if it were a class you were required to attend, and stick to your schedule!) Your "level of participation" grade in Aural Skills will be based on your work with the MacGamut software. You will be allowed to make your own case for this part of the grade, showing me your scores, the frequency of your work with the software, and the pace of your improvement. Not all students will progress at the same pace.

  • 55% - Workbook assignments (avg: you may drop your lowest)
  • 30% - TESTS (averaged)
  • 5% - Participation in Aural Training
  • 10% - Final Exam

AURAL SKILLS (Pass/Fail)

Your accomplishment in Aural Skills (sight-singing with solfeggio, melodic and harmonic dictation) will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis. The "passing" level will be set at 80% or above. If you score below 80% (you will be allowed to take two tests), you will receive a grade of Incomplete until you are able to accomplish the required level.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

The cumulative nature of this course demands strict adherence to attendance and consistent, timely completion of assignments. Missed classes or assignments will be difficult to make up.I will make no distinction between "excused" and "unexcused" absences. You will be allowed three "free" absences, after which your grade will be lowered 3 points (on your 100 point semester grade). If you are late by more than eight minutes, you will be counted tardy: two tardies will count as one absence. After your 8th absence, no credit will be given for this class under normal circumstances. Missed quizzes given at the beginning of class can not be made up.

HONOR CODE

The Millsaps College Honor Code affirms that you are part of a community that values personal honesty regarding your work. In an environment like Millsaps collaboration among students is expected, even encouraged, so it is incumbent upon you to make sure that the work you turn in reflects your work. In order to do this, save plenty of time to complete assignments. This allows you time to reflect by yourself. If you do use suggestions or ideas of your peers, document them just as you would from written scholarly sources.
