Music History & Literature III & IV

GRADING AND ATTENDANCE

This course involves a significant amount of reading, listening, research, and writing. It is one of the most important courses you will take as a music major. It is the primary survey course of the literature, and your only complete overview of music history.

I cannot overemphasize the importance of regular attendance. There WILL be material covered in class that is not found in the textbook (including our comments in class on certain details in the scores). You will be allowed 3 "free" absences. After that, your course grade will be reduced by 3 points per class. Tardiness by more than 7 minutes will be recorded as a half-absence (two times late and you'll have one absence). Should you find yourself unable to attend a class session, make sure you have covered the material you missed.
GRADING for both MUSC 3122 and MUSC 3132

  • 45% Unit Tests, AVERAGED
  • 05% Attendance Grade
  • 15% Informal writings, Weiss/Taruskin, quizzes, misc.
  • 15% Research Paper (including work on proposal, bibliography, etc.)
  • 15% Final Exam (comprehensive)
