This is
your foundational course in the music literature sequence at Millsaps,
designed to provide you with tools you can use for success in all
future courses that involve listening and thinking about music. We
will attempt to fine the connection between style and musical
expression, from Medieval to modern music. The most important "texts"
for this course are the musical scores themselves, which can teach
us their own rules as we study them. To help us learn to think consciously
and deliberately about style, we will use Jan LaRue's "Style Analysis"
and learn how it can be applied to music of any era. Seaton's book
will provide a guide to the essential musical thought of each period
in music history, giving us a wider context for the notes themselves.
