The Evolution of Style in Western Music

STUDY GUIDE FOR TEST #3
The Baroque Era

Make sure you have read the relevant pages in Seaton listed on your handout.

This test will focus primarily on your ability to recognize musical genre by both eye (score) and ear (listening). Your ability to do this quickly and successfully will depend to a great extent on how well you use the style analysis techniques of LaRue, as we understand them so far. As you study and listen to the musical examples below, use SHMRG to separate and consider in your mind the various musical elements, so that you can synthesize them into awareness of the musical style of that selection. Each genre name is listed in red.

Although you WILL be asked to name compositions and composers, identifying the genre and WHY you think it is that particular genre is far more important.
