GRADING & ATTENDANCE POLICIES

It is important that you are actively and regularly involved in class. Much of our class time will be spent discussing the music we listen to. Your enthusiastic and thoughtful input will be crucial to your learning experience, and to the overall chemistry of the class. Obviously, you cannot participate in class if you do not attend class. If you want to make an "A" in the course, you will need to be present and prepared for each and every class. Adequate preparation means that you have completed the assigned reading, taken notes on the reading or thought about it enough to engage in discussion, and completed any written assignments or projects on time.

You may be absent up to four times during the semester without penalty. However, once you have exceeded 6 absences beyond the allowed 4 (10 total), you will receive a warning card via a-mail. After more than 8 (12 total, or about 20% of the total number of classes), you will automatically be dropped from the course with a failing grade.

Your Participation grade (below) will reflect: attendance, degree of participation in class discussion, preparation for class, and overall willingness to contribute to the learning of the class as a group. Please arrange your life so that you arrive at class on time. If a pop quiz or short writing is given at the beginning of class and you miss it because you are late, you will not be allowed to make it up.

If you are too sick to attend class, only an official note from a doctor or the Millsaps health clinic nurse will excuse your absence -- an e-mail from you to me will not necessarily be sufficient. If you are involved in college athletics, you must clear any travel absences with me at the beginning of the semester (as soon as you have this information). It is your responsibility to make up work that you miss, and it is your responsibility to see if a colleague will lend you their notes from the class so you will know what we covered.

  • 10% - Participation
  • 20% - Essays, short writings
