Pianists
Rachel Heard and Lynn
Raley will perform together on two pianos Johannes Brahms' Variations on
a Theme by Haydn, and Igor Stravinsky's Concerto for Two Solo Pianos.
The work by Brahms is most often heard
in its orchestral version. This arrangement for two pianos is by the composer.
Stravinsky's work is a product of his
neo-classical period, and was written as a concert vehicle to introduce Stravinsky's
son Soulima to the public as a pianist. The father and son performed the work
together numerous times, and toured with a special custom-made piano by Pleyel
that was constructed as a solid square case with two keyboards on either end.
The Concerto features exciting motoric cross-rhythms, a lyrical slow movement,
and an ending that culminates in a fugue, with subjects that cross freely between
the two pianos.
The concert begins
at three o'clock on Sunday afternnon, April 10th. It will be held in the Gertrude
C. Ford Academic Complex Recital Hall on the Millsaps
College campus (on Park Avenue, just off N. State Street). Call 974-1422 for
directions to the recital
hall. The recital is open to the public and is free of charge.
